About The Conference of Drama Schools

The Conference of Drama Schools ( CDS ) was formed largely as a means of strengthening the voice of UK member schools.

It was developed to encourage the highest standards in training for actors and stage managers, as well as hosting a variety of associated training in related Technical and Media Studies in the UK.

The Conference played a leading part in negotiations that led to the formation of the National Council for Drama Training, an organisation on which there are representatives from every aspect of the professional theatre.

Whatever administrative changes are necessitated by current developments of higher education or of changing patterns in the professional theatre, the need for high quality training will persist.

The member schools of the CDS believe that they provide such training.

Students thinking of applying to CDS courses should take note that all the courses are designed to prepare students for the professional theatre and media.

In this they are very different from most degree courses at Universities and Colleges and generally do not contain a large measure of academic work unless this is specifically indicated. Before applying for an audition, prospective students should ask themselves whether they have a clear idea of the work they hope to be doing on completion and if they have the determination and will-power to go through what is a very demanding process both physically and mentally.

Students should remember that training is a two-way process: it is just as important for the student to have confidence in the school of their choice as it is for the staff of the school to recognise the potential of the student.
